Dali & Gala
Dali and Gala
Dali and Gala is
the outcome of the film component of the Apparatus and Hand Project, filmed in Mackay in 2004. The project
was produced by Queensland Theatre Company and Opera North, filmed by Martin Francis and edited by Kurt
Duval.
The performers, Kurt and Nikki, created within a two week rehearsal period, a performance script
that explored, through acrobatic balancing and movement, the life of Salvador Dali and his muse Gala.
The performance script focused on the tumultuous relationship between the iconic and controversial lovers.
It encompassed the passion of love in all its forms; from intimacy to aggression, stimulation to degradation.
The skull image was a recreation of the skull image Dali created in 1951, with seven female bodies. Kurt
facilitated a series of workshops focused on movement and circus skills with the Anti Matter Trash Queen
Circus to create the movement sequences and the skull image. Whilst Dali’s image was static, the movement
sequences and imagery of death were symbolically created to represent Dali’s relationships with many
different women and the end of the epic relationship between Dali and Gala.
The film editing of Dali
and Gala, explored the classical surrealist style of Dali ‘s work whilst its structure is framed within
the format of the contemporary music film clip.
Dali and Gala is an exceptional outcome for the Apparatus
and Hand Project and will be fondly remembered by all involved.

Character Synopsis
The Little Dragon is on a quest to find another creature ‘just like him.’ At the beginning of the story
he is innocent, and trusts everyone. As he travels on his quest, he meets other creatures-some good and
some bad – and learns about safety, danger, and most importantly, friendship. Though he is friendly,
playful, and always ready to meet new friends, when he grows hot and frustrated he can blow fire! As
he grows older, he becomes more confident, compassionate, and powerful, finding strengths in himself
and in the companions who help him overcome great danger. At the end of the story he does indeed find
another baby dragon; but, as a result of his quest, he realizes that friends do not have to be identical
to be worthy, and that difference can be great strength.
Story Synopsis
The Little Dragon tells the story of a baby dragon who falls from the stars in a flaming egg that hatches
in a dark cave. When he is born he is cold and alone, but he is discovered by two dragonflies that take
him into the warmth and light. He notices that he is different than the two dragonflies. He yearns to
find another dragon just like himself.
The dragonflies agree to help him on his quest to find another dragon. This quest takes them all on a
fantastic musical journey to the forest, sea, city and sky. As they travel, they meet a variety of characters,
some friendly, some dangerous, that teach the dragon about himself and the world around him. The most
dangerous creature in his world is a man named the Collector, who spends his life trapping and hoarding
rare creatures. The Little Dragon is destined to be the ‘Star’ of his collection. As the dragon moves
from place to place, the Collector stalks him, often with the help of unfriendly creatures.
Throughout the story the Little Dragon’s kindness, coupled with the aid of the friends he meets on his
journey, helps him to avoid the Collector’s grasp. However, when he reaches the city, the Collector manages
to trick the Little Dragon and trap him in a cage. The Collector now has the prized dragon for which
he has always wished.
Yet, as we know, we should be careful of what we wish for, because sometimes our dreams are not what
we imagine. The Little Dragon is much more powerful than the collector realized, and easily makes his
escape into the sky.
In the last scene the, another egg falls to the earth and the Collector, still on his quest for the creature
of his dreams, races The Little Dragon to be the first to find it. However, The Little Dragon and his
friends are waiting for him. The collector is himself caught, and all the creatures he has held trapped
in his magic coat are set free.
As for the Little Dragon, he finds great joy in the knowledge that soon another dragon will be born.
However, with this joy is a realization that he does not need to find someone just like him to know what
true friendship can be.
This is a humorous and engaging performance, illustrated with rich, beautiful images and fascinating
creatures. The simple story is clearly told with words, music, dance, puppetry, and light by internationally
acclaimed artists from Korea and Australia.

DESCRIPTION OF SHOW
The Journey
This physical theatre dreamscape captures the visions that cross the mind of Person X in the last 30
seconds of existence and flashes those moments in life that create or dissipate reality.
Multi media elements slice open and release a stench from the bowels of oppression whilst the grotesque
imagery and dark emotions of the Japanese dance form Butoh, juxtapose the bright visual fascination of
circus skills. The journey of Person X transports you into the realms of life within death and failure
within success.
Person X travels between the delusional wasteland of a culturally constructed society and the internal
struggle of emotionally charged primal instincts. Person X will discover the pleasures of power yet suffer
the pain of deceit. In radiant defiance, Person X will shatter the climatic conclusion by creating a
reality of Internal Solitude.
Internal Solitude Narrative The Journey
Desolate and barren was the desert inside the zombie shell of person X, who is also represented
by person Y. Wracked by depression and engulfed by the poisonous wasteland of society the reality of
person X crumbled as the thought of eternal peace entered her world. A cliff.
The screech of tyres. Flight. This is where we begin. Person X is born from the fetal position of the
suspended zombie shell of person Y. Person X enters the world carried by representations of both society
and ethereal beings (her emotion).
Person X is an animal with only instinct as her guide. Her emotion is serene and pure. After interacting
with the ethereal beings person X discovers society.
The infant Person X begins to imitate and reflect society, watching,
listening and following in an attempt to capture the attention of others.
However, society does not accept that Person X is innately different. Person X cannot physically attain
the abilities and expectations of society. Person X is filled with fear and confusion. Implanted in the
memory of person X is the sound of coins dropping as a symbol of societal success that highlights his
or her failure. The ethereal beings sporadically respond to all experiences of person X.
The instincts of person X, the joys of youth slowly become dulled and restricted by the empowered social
forces. A confused person X stands under the zombie shell of person Y.
[The zombie shell of person Y is partially transformed into a deformed shape by the sound of twisting
metal. Video projection of adolescent symbols.]
The adolescent Person X and the ethereal beings join society. Driven by envy Person X learns the powers
of manipulation and conformity. Person X conceals his or her innate difference and plays the games of
society. However, person X still does not have the abilities of society, instead she disables the people
within society by seducing them into conformity.
[The zombie shell of person Y is completely transformed into a deformed
shape by the sound of twisting metal. Video projection of adult symbols.]
The adult person X is flanked by the ethereal beings and continues to manipulate and force conformity
upon others. Slowly society begins to retaliate by stripping person X of her identity and lack of ability.
Person X begins to panic and resorts to violent actions to maintain the façade.
The ethereal beings join society and encage person X, whilst reflecting what person X had become. The
body of person X is transformed into the same deformed body shape as the Zombie shell of person Y.
Person X is left isolated with only the sound of a heartbeat. A golden beam of light appears. Person
X struggles towards it and discovers his/her manipulated body is normal under the light.
Continuous laughter is heard, society re-enters and pulls Person
X out of the light and drags her into a crucifix. Society collapses on top of person Y as person X plummets
into the beginning of the end.
The sound of a flat line is heard.
